Poet Biography

Anne Ridler was born in London in 1912, where she found an intrest in Journalism. Ridler soon procured a position in the London offices of Faber and Fabers, a publishing house that at the time also employed T.S. Eliot as an editor. Eliot encouraged her writing and she released her first poetry volume in 1939. Ridler continuened her work there another year, but soon was married at the age of 26 to marry Vivian Ridler, with whom Ridler eventually had four children. Although her poetry was sparse for quite some time Ridler began to translate opera librettos and verse play, putting out a play titled Agrippina in 1982 in her hometown of London. She also produced three Mozart operas. Ridler released Collected Poems in 1995, and was made an OBE for her services to literature in June of 2001, just a few months before her death.
