Poet Biography

Born in Born in Ragusa (today Dubrovnik, Croatia) or Florence 1332/34 - Died in San Miniato (Pisa) c. 1400

Son of a Guelph family of Florence, Sacchetti was a poet and a writer who held important public offices in Florence and was Podestà in many towns of Tuscany. He wrote lyric verse and moral discourses.He started to write Trecentonovelle in 1392 when he was Podestà in San Miniato.

He is best remembered for his Novelle (c.1378–c.1395), a collection of tales in the manner of the Decameron.The 34 musical settings of his lyric poetry include works by every Florentine composer of the period. Sacchetti's own settings of a ballata and a canzonetta are lost.
