John Wilbye, born in Diss, Norfolk in 1574, the son of a tanner. When his neighbour, the daughter of Cornwallis married Sir Thomas Kitson of Hengrave, she took Wilbye and his lute with her to provide music which he continued to do all his life. He published two sets of madrigals, the first containing 30 was published in 1598, and the second containing 34 in 1609.
