This is one of my Favourite Poem, we have tried to provide the Translation and Analysis to derive the meaning of the famous poem Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi Ki Har Khwaish Pe Dam Nikle by Mirza Ghalib
The Poem:
Daray kyon mera qaatil? kya rahega us ki gardan par?
Voh khoon, jo chashm-e-tar se umr bhar yoon dam-ba-dam nikle
Nikalna khuld se aadam ka soonte aaye hain lekin
Bahot be-aabru hokar tere kooche se hum nikle
Bharam khul jaaye zaalim! teri qaamat ki daraazi ka
Agar is tarahe par pech-o-kham ka pech-o-kham nikle
Magar likhvaaye koi usko khat, to hum se likhvaaye
Hui subaha, aur ghar se kaan par rakh kar qalam nikle
Hui is daur mein mansoob mujh se baada aashaami
Phir aaya voh zamaana, jo jahaan mein jaam-e-jaam nikle
Hui jin se tavaqqa khastagi ki daad paane ki
Voh ham se bhi zyaada khasta e tegh e sitam nikle
Mohabbat mein nahin hai farq jeenay aur marnay ka
Usi ko dekh kar jeetay hain, jis kaafir pe dam nikle
Zara kar jor seene par ki teer-e-pursitam niklejo
Wo nikle to dil nikle, jo dil nikle to dam nikle
Khuda ke waaste parda na kaabe se uthaa zaalim
Kaheen aisa na ho yaan bhi wahi kaafir sanam nikle
Kahaan maikhane ka darwaaza Ghalib aur kahaan vaaiz
Par itna jaantay hain kal voh jaata tha ke ham nikle
Hazaaron khwahishen aisi ke har khwahish pe dam nikle
Bohat niklay mere armaan, lekin phir bhi kam nikle…
English Translation:
Why should my killer (lover) be afraid? No one will hold her responsible
for the blood which will continuously flow through my eyes all my life
We have heard about the dismissal of Adam from Heaven,
With a more humiliation, I am leaving the street on which you live…
Oh tyrant, your true personality will be known to all
if the curls of my hair slip through my turban!
But if someone wants to write her a letter, they can ask me,
every morning I leave my house with my pen on my ear.
In that age, I turned to drinking (alcohol)
and then the time came when my entire world was occupied by alcohol
From whom I expected justice/praise for my weakness
turned out to be more injured with the same cruel sword
When in love, there is little difference between life and death
we live by looking at the infidel who we are willing to die for
Put some pressure on your heart to remove that cruel arrow,
for if the arrow comes out, so will your heart…and your life.
For god’s sake, don’t lift the cover off any secrets you tyrant
the infidel might turn out to be my lover!
The preacher and the bar’s entrance are way apart
yet I saw him entering the bar as I was leaving!
thousands of desires, each worth dying for…
many of them I have realized…yet I yearn for more
Background:
The development of one such nostalgic system in my mind, a couple of days back, rose as a hub, this ballad by Mirza Ghalib. The principal half-line having been advanced by a film that returned out two years and got to be monstrously prominent with any individual who needed to demonstrate they can watch and delight in genuine Indian silver screen. Wistfulness is an odd thing. One thought, and the mind quickly re-join each hub in the system and with this developing system raises each inclination that you connected with that thought, individual, occurrence.
In Ghalib’s is viewed as a standout amongst the most complex styles in Urdu verse. There is another translation on every progressive perusing. What makes it additionally fascinating is the means by a couple is and the extent to which he figures out how to pack in. This makes any exacting interpretation, most lacking and some of the time rather dreary, as will be clear from the lines beneath!
Structure:
There are guidelines to the arrangement of a ghazal however in particular, it is made up absolutely of Couplets. All Couplets take after one meter, called beher. The last expressions of the second line of every sher are the same , this is called radif and the crucial rhyme that words before the radif must have and is called kaafiya. With that exceptionally technical and perhaps unnecessary portrayal, here’s one of the best Ghazals ever.
Analysis:
This verse resonates with the true Ghalib. The true Ghalib is known to be the writer who can carve in the romantic emotions into poetry. Ghalib symbolizes his lover as a killer, since his lover does not give back the love Ghalib has for the lover, thus making him suffer like a person being killed from the inside. He addresses his killer that you don’t have to be afraid of any punishment if he undergoes any pain. Specifically the blood flowing through the eyes suggests that pain has taken over ghalib, since his lover is his "killer" as well but he wont blame the lover for any pain he faces. Love is blind afterall.
Being persistent is the very cause of all lovers. These verses compliments the work of Ghalib immensely, you can see that Ghalib has stated that he has a writing pen for the continuous letter writing to his lover. People who are madly in love do things that are connected to the lovers will, in the earlier times, where communication was only possible through letters, Ghalib states that he wants to communicate with his lover and writes her letters all the time. He says to people that if someone wants to write her a letter, they can ask him since he is always ready to communicate with his lover. He wouldn’t miss any part of contacting her.
In the first 5 couplets of this poem, the poet expresses love into strong words. The agony a lover who turns out to be a betrayer and someone who is not loyal hurts everyone. So has Ghalib faced the same problem, his lover is not loving back him and he expresses his feeling of pain through different situations like the dismissal of Adam from the heaven which has to be very painful for Adam, so has been painful for the poet to let go off his lover.
In the later part of the poem, till the last couplet, we see the same story being presented in different manners with different analysis. The poet asks for justice from the unjust, talks about love as life and death, getting addicted to alcohol and utter betrayal scenarios are explained in the later couplets. Ghalib has the way of expressing his feelings by putting the readers mind through scenarios, such as how a lover so cruel who would not accept true love from a person like Ghalib, could turn out to be a infidel if the lover removes the veil covering her. You can see the how much the poet is disheartened by the actions of his lover through the whole poem and in the end just ends with the same couplet as started to conclude that no matter, in life you don’t always get what you want, basically because you never stop wanting.
Theme:
The over theme of the poem revolves around thousands of desires, each worth dying for…
many of them I have realized…yet I yearn for more. All of the thoughts and desires Ghalib has for his lover are never enough. They are endless and even if some of those desires and thoughts are fulfilled, all of them can never be attained.
Summary:
Ghalib has the tendency to motivate his readers through romantic poetry. The readers are always intrigued by his work and thoughts he puts into his poetry. This poem similarly tells us about how we are never going to fulfill all of our desires, since they are endless. We complete one desire, the next one out there. Similarly, turning into endless lust for the love of your life.
The poem in the form of a song is sung by Jagjit Sing …
